La Reunion is a perfect destination for those who love hiking in attractive landscapes. The island offers spectacular volcanic coastlines (even though most of them not suitable for swimming) and varied mountain landscapes. We'd dreamed of a journey to La Reunion for a while and finally took the opportunity in May 2017 when we had only a 10-day vacation and did not want to travel to a completely different time zone. We rented an apartment in the beautiful Saint Pierre at the south coast, from which the whole island can easily be discovered by car. Unfortunately, we had to skip two of the most popular hiking tours, which are the hikes to the top of the island's highest mountain Piton des Neiges and into the caldera of the still active Piton de la Fournaise. Nevertheless, we were able to discover the vast diversity of landscapes of La Reunion island during six impressive hikes. Our personal highlights were absolutely stunning sunrises and sunsets in the mountains, the hiking tour to La Chapelle, the impressive coastlines, and the delicious French pastries.
